Finger Lakes Times Winning Memoirs Published Sunday March 28

The winning memoirs of the Finger Lakes Times Memoir Writing Contest appeared in the Sunday, March 28, issue of the Finger Lakes Times. The contest was part of this year's Community Read of "The Color of Water" by James McBride.

Geneva High School Junior Hallie McDonald won first place in the high school category with a loving reminiscence of her grandparents garden in Geneva. 

Children's Librarian Ann van der Meulen won first place in the adult category with a poignant account of Rose, an immigrant from Poland who lost many of her family to the death camps of World War II, but stressed the liberating effects of education in raising her two sons in Geneva.

Merrill Laura (Brown) Race of Penn Yan was awarded Runner-Up in the Adult category with her account of coming to terms with discrimination and prejudice as a youth in Geneva by having a willingness to judge people as individuals and not as members of any particular group.
